Tulum in October: What the Low Season Is Actually Like

Quick answer

October is Tulum's low season: hot and humid, with rain that usually arrives in short heavy bursts rather than all-day grey, and it falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season that runs from June through November. The trade is a quieter coast, easier tables at restaurants and softer rates. Come with a flexible booking and travel insurance, plan mornings for the beach and afternoons for shade, and you'll have the place close to yourself. Aquí todo va despacio, and in October it goes slower still.

The straight answer

October is low season in Tulum, and that means two things at once: the weather is at its least reliable, and the coast is at its calmest. It's hot, it's humid, it rains, and there are far fewer people here than there will be in January. Whether that's a good trade depends entirely on what you came for.

We'll say the quiet part out loud, since we live here. October is our favourite month to be on this beach and the hardest month to promise anyone a perfect week. Both are true.

What the weather actually does

Rain in October usually arrives as a burst, not a blanket. A dark sky builds, it comes down hard for twenty minutes to an hour, and then it stops and steams off the road. Mornings are more often clear than afternoons. Days that are grey from dawn to dusk happen, but they're not the standard shape of the month.

It's humid. Properly humid. Things dry slowly, hair does what it wants, and a swimsuit you hang up at 4 p.m. is still damp at 8. Pack a second one. It's the single most useful piece of packing advice for this time of year.

About hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from the start of June to the end of November, and October sits inside it. Most Octobers pass without anything reaching this coast. Some don't. That's the honest position, and any hotel telling you otherwise is selling.

What this means practically:

  • Book a rate you can move. Our cancellation and deposit terms vary by rate type and season, so read the conditions on the rate you're choosing before you confirm rather than after.
  • Take travel insurance. We recommend it strongly for the non-refundable parts of any itinerary, including flights, cancellation charges and trip interruption or delay. In autumn that recommendation carries more weight than usual.
  • Watch the forecast in the week before, not the month before. Long-range storm predictions are noise. Five days out, they're useful.

What you get in exchange

Space. That's the honest headline. In October the beach in front of us has almost nobody on it on a weekday morning. Restaurants have tables. The cenotes have room in the water instead of a queue on the stairs. Rates across the coast are at their softest.

There's also something about the light after rain here that doesn't happen in the dry months. The jungle goes very green, the air clears, and the evening turns soft rather than glaring. It's the version of Tulum we'd show someone if we only got one shot.

How to plan the day

Front-load it. Beach and sea in the morning, when the sky is most likely clear and the heat hasn't stacked up. Eat, then take the middle of the day slowly under shade. If the rain comes, it usually comes then, and you'll be in the right place for it.

Cenotes are the best rainy-afternoon plan on this coast. You're getting wet either way, the water underground stays the same cool temperature regardless of what the sky is doing, and the crowds thin out the moment weather arrives. Los cenotes están cerca. Ask us and we'll arrange the trip and the transport.

The spa is the other answer. So is a long lunch. So is doing nothing at all, which in October is a genuinely defensible plan.

Late October and Hanal Pixán

The end of the month runs into Día de Muertos, 31 October to 2 November, which on the Yucatán peninsula is celebrated as Hanal Pixán. It's a family observance more than a spectacle, marked in homes and cemeteries with altars and specific foods. If you're here for it, treat it with the respect you'd want shown at your own family's table. Ask before photographing anything or anyone.

What to pack for October

  • Two swimsuits, minimum
  • A light rain layer, not a heavy one
  • Sandals you don't mind soaking, and something with grip for wet stone
  • Biodegradable sunscreen if you're planning cenotes or protected lagoons, where standard ones aren't allowed in the water
  • Insect repellent. After rain, it earns its space

Is October a good time to come?

If you need guaranteed sun for a short trip built around one perfect beach day, come in the dry months instead. If you have a week, some flexibility, and you'd rather have the coast quiet than the sky spotless, October is the best value month on this stretch of the Riviera Maya.

Bienvenido a casa. Bring the second swimsuit.

Common questions

Is October a good time to visit Tulum?

It's the best-value month if you have flexibility. The coast is quiet, restaurants have tables and rates are at their softest. The trade-off is hot, humid weather, frequent short downpours and the fact that October sits inside the Atlantic hurricane season.

Does it rain all day in Tulum in October?

Usually not. Rain tends to come in heavy bursts of twenty minutes to an hour, more often in the afternoon than the morning. Full grey days happen but they aren't the norm, so plan beach time for mornings.

When is hurricane season in Tulum?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so October falls inside it. Most Octobers pass without a storm reaching this coast, but it's the reason we recommend a flexible rate and travel insurance for autumn trips.

What can you do in Tulum when it rains?

Cenotes are the best wet-weather plan here, since you're getting wet anyway and the underground water temperature doesn't change with the sky. Tours and private transportation are things we arrange for guests, so tell us the morning of and we'll sort the trip. The spa and a long lunch are the other honest answers.

Should I buy travel insurance for an autumn trip?

We recommend it, particularly for the non-refundable parts of an itinerary: cancellation charges, flights, and trip interruption or delay. Our own deposit and cancellation conditions vary by rate type and by season, so check the terms attached to the rate you book.
